Costco’s New Shopping Policy Gives Executive Members a Head Start
Costco has recently made headlines with a significant update to its shopping policy, one that gives Executive Members an extra reason to renew their membership. As of September 2, 2025, Costco now allows Executive Members to shop one hour earlier than the general public at select warehouse locations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico. This move marks a major shift in the retailer’s long-standing approach to equal-access shopping and has sparked a wave of interest among both loyal and new customers.
What Is the New Costco Shopping Policy?
The main change centers around early shopping hours for Executive Members, who now have exclusive access to Costco warehouses one hour before standard opening times, which is 9 a.m. on weekdays and Sundays, and at 9:30 a.m. on Saturdays. This policy currently applies to select warehouses (not all), and covers not just access to the store itself, but also to high-traffic services such as Food Court, The Pharmacy (except Sundays) and Optical Centers.
It’s important to note that regular Gold Star and Business members still shop during normal hours. And while not every Costco location is participating, the company has confirmed that it will be expanding this perk gradually based on customer demand and operational capacity.
Why Did Costco Make This Change?
This shift is part of a larger strategy to add value to the Executive Membership, which costs $120 per year compared to the $60 standard membership. In return, Executive Members already receive:
- 2% cashback on eligible Costco purchases (up to $1,000 annually)
- Additional discounts on services like travel, insurance, and check printing
By executive member early shopping, Costco is doubling down on exclusivity and convenience, two key drivers that have helped them maintain high renewal rates, especially among Executive Members.
As stores have gotten busier post-pandemic, many members have voiced concerns about long lines and crowded aisles. This new policy directly addresses those concerns by giving top-tier members a quieter, less stressful shopping window.
What Are the Benefits of Early Shopping for Executive Members?
- Avoid the Crowds: Shopping early means beating the rush. It’s especially valuable for customers who want a more relaxed, efficient experience.
- Better Product Access: With Costco’s limited-inventory model, popular items often sell out quickly. Early access could mean the difference between snagging that new Kirkland Signature product or going home empty-handed.
- Faster Service at the Pharmacy and Optical Center: For those using in-store services, early hours provide a better chance of shorter wait times.
What Do Regular Members Need to Know?
If you’re a Gold Star or Business Member, you’ll still be able to shop during regular hours; nothing has changed for you. But you won’t be able to enter the store early, even if you just want to use the food court or pharmacy.
This change might lead some regular members to consider upgrading to Executive Membership, especially if they shop often or make large purchases that could earn meaningful cash back. Also, it’s worth noting that some platforms and services even offer Free credit no deposit new member incentives, making it easier to try out exclusive programs or savings without upfront commitments.
That said, Costco has made it clear that standard memberships still offer great value, and they have no plans to take away existing benefits from non-Executive members.
